This fall, Apple will be releasing the next macOS version (11), named Big Sur. It brings with it key changes that will impact almost every security vendor.

This paper will talk about the impact of these changes on security vendors and the steps that will need to be taken in order to get ready for the same. Just like on any other OS, macOS security solutions heavily rely on kernel-level frameworks. On macOS, it is KAUTH APIs and Network Kernel Extensions that are relied upon in order to build the critical pieces of security, more specifically the anti-virus, web security and any other network protection.

Starting from macOS Catalina (version 10.15), macOS has already started showing signs of these modules being deprecated. The modules are replaced by a more robust and secure user-mode framework called System Extensions. The KAUTH APIs will be replaced by the Endpoint Security Extension, and the Network Kernel Extension will be replaced by the Network Extension (NExt). From the release of Big Sur, these kernel extensions will no longer be supported, hence the corresponding security solutions will break.

Based on our experience of building multiple NExts, migrating the existing Network Kernel Extensions to NExt is not a straightforward process and involves a lot of undocumented implementations. The paper will detail the nitty-gritty of migrating to NExts so that it can be implemented the right way with minimal time. This will help educate security vendors and the community to be prepared for this upcoming change on macOS.
