Banking trojans written in Delphi have been used for a long time by Brazilian cybercriminals in order to perform fraud in Latin America. This kind of malware is not sophisticated, as it uses simple techniques, such as monitoring window titles, to know when a victim connects to an online banking account. There's no need to use man-in-the-browser (MitB) or API hooking techniques as the typical Russian banking trojans do, because the malware is still effective.

That's what characterizes Brazilian threat actors: the use of simple methods and effectiveness. Some months ago now some of these attackers began to cross the ocean using malware like Grandoreiro and Mekotio to target European banks located in countries such as Spain and Portugal.

During this talk we will focus on the actor Rooty Dolphin, active at least since 2017. We will detail the group's tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs), targets and IOCs, as well as different campaigns currently active in Spain and Chile, where they are distributing Mekotio. Thanks to reverse engineering techniques and metadata aggregation we have been able to track this actor back to attacks in 2017 where they attacked Brazilian banks, before moving to Chile and more recently to Europe.

The objective of this research is to provide visibility of this actor, their modus operandi and distribution methods, as it seems they have arrived in Europe to stay.
